M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) in Hong Kong, is delighted to announce the opening of Design Ah! Experience the Wonder of Everyday Design, an interactive, family-friendly exhibition that explores design and its role in everyday actions. Through hands-on games, participatory installations, and immersive audiovisual environments, visitors are encouraged to look closely and learn through play.
Design Ah! invites visitors to play with ordinary objects in new and unexpected ways. From chopsticks and toothbrushes to buses and traffic lights, the items we use every day were all designed by people who thought about how they could improve our everyday life. It also explores how we use our bodies, including our eyes, hands, and feet, to understand the world around us.
The exhibition features twenty-one stations organised around ten daily actions. Several of the stations have been adapted to Hong Kong’s visual environment and culinary traditions. Developed through playfulness, ingenuity, and observation, these experiences spark curiosity and create moments of inspiration.
Organised by M+, Design Ah! Experience the Wonder of Everyday Design is an adaptation of Design Ah! Exhibition neo by NHK Educational Corporation, NHK Promotions Inc., and TOKYO NODE. The presentation at M+ is curated by Ikko Yokoyama, Senior Curator, Head of Design and Architecture, M+; Keri Ryan, Associate Director, Learning and Interpretation, M+; Taku Satoh, general director; Yugo Nakamura, video director; and Shuta Hasunuma, music director.
Presented alongside the exhibition, M+ Ah!, a newly commissioned series of short videos, will be displayed on the M+ Facade every night between June 26 and October 11, 2026. Adapted for Hong Kong from NHK’s television programme Design Ah! neo, the work offers a whimsical, design-led perspective on ordinary objects and everyday moments, with fresh visual interpretations and newly added elements inspired by the city’s culture.
Throughout the exhibition period, M+ will host a series of public programmes related to the ideas in the show. These include Family Days with interactive drop-in activities for children and families, and Children’s Summer Takeover: Creative Day Camp, which invites young visitors to explore design ideas through different media. The museum’s School Programmes and Community and Access initiatives will also welcome diverse groups from primary schools, special schools, community centres, and other organisations to engage with the exhibition through interactive activities. For more details, please visit the M+ website.
The M+ Shop will launch two special merchandise collections that bring the exhibitions’ spirit of delight into daily life. Featuring clicky key chains, plush toys, blind boxes, apparel, accessories, and more, these fun-filled products are available at the M+ Shop on site and online.
