Available to Promise

Running through June 28, 2026, across Arnhem, The Netherlands, the fourth edition of the State of Fashion Biennale unfolds under the title Available to Promise: Hidden Systems, Shared Futures. The biennale comprises a central exhibition alongside a city-wide programme of exhibitions, performances, talks, and screenings. Positioned as a leading platform for critical fashion discourse and practice, State of Fashion examines how fashion and textiles can contribute to alternative futures, engendering new forms of collaboration, responsibility, and collective imagination.

Curated by Anne Zhou, Anouchka van Driel, and Shanu Walpita, the biennale approaches fashion not as an object or image, but as a system. It examines the infrastructures that make fashion possible: supply chains, platforms, labour networks, trade routes, and the ecological resources that sustain them. Borrowed from logistics terminology, “Available to Promise” refers to what can be delivered, when, and to whom. From this starting point, the Biennale considers fashion as a dense material and social ecology, where histories of making and circulation bring human and more-than-human actors, ancestral practices, and technological processes into relation, asking how these systems might be critiqued, dismantled, and reimagined.

Structured through five interconnected pillars: Develop, Distribute, Hype, Experience, and Transform, and accompanied by ONsite residencies in China, Ghana, and Sri Lanka, the Biennale brings together artists, designers, and practitioners whose works engage fashion’s hidden infrastructures from multiple geographic, and situated perspectives. Through newly commissioned works and multidisciplinary projects, the exhibition traces the movements of materials, labour, knowledge, capital, and desire across contexts.

At a time marked by ecological crisis, geopolitical fracture, and grand transformations in technology and production, Available to Promise foregrounds the systems through which fashion operates and the relations they produce. Bringing these often-invisible structures into view, the Biennale examines the possibilities for imagining these systems otherwise.

Designed by OMA / AMO, the exhibition architecture stages an encounter between fashion’s visible forms and the infrastructures that underpin them, while the visual identity by International Magic draws on the codes and languages of logistics and circulation. Complementing the exhibition are Library of Promise, developed with the International Library of Fashion Research (Oslo), and something CINEMA, an open-call programme of moving-image works that extends the Biennale’s central inquiries.
