Two positions as artistic PhD research fellows in Contemporary Art and Contemporary Art & Performance.
The Academy of Fine Art is a leading international art school, structured around an open curriculum, practice-led research and strong situatedness. Centred within a studio-based programme grounded in practice, autonomy, and contextualization, the Academy invites dialogue and exchange with some of the foremost artists, thinkers, and curators shaping the notion of art and its field of action today.
For 2027, two PhD research fellow positions are available. One within the field of Contemporary Art at the Academy of Fine Art, and one in collaboration with the Academy of Theatre, oriented towards performing arts practices. The positions are part of the PhD Programme in Artistic Research at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO).
The Academy of Fine Art brings together artists from various backgrounds, countries, fields, genders, and generations, creating a dynamic environment for artistic research. Our approach to artistic research is anchored in individual practices and independent thinking processes connected to developments within international art communities, with the potential to lead to collective forms of inquiry and action.
The positions
For the Contemporary Art position, the Academy of Fine Art embraces a diverse range of media, disciplines, and approaches to explore form, materiality, and conceptual and contemporary socio-political issues within and beyond the exhibition format.
The second position is hosted by the Academy of Fine Art and developed in close collaboration with the Academy of Theatre. The collaboration connects contemporary art and performing arts practices and welcomes applicants working across theatre, performance, stage-based, and interdisciplinary formats.

The PhD research fellowship is a three-year full-time position, with a starting date of October 1, 2027. The initial annual compensation is NOK 550,800.
