Aziz Hazara: Coming Home

Aziz Hazara: Coming Home seeks to return material discarded at Bagram Airfield  following the American military’s abrupt withdrawal from Afghanistan. At SculptureCenter, the items comprising Coming Home offer a glimpse into the material remnants of a twenty-year war. Cumulatively, they bear witness to everyday life in a military outpost, bringing into focus the massive human, environmental, and material dimensions of a conflict that, outside of Afghanistan, was primarily experienced through images. Although the exhibition consists of debris—discarded objects from a specific site—it serves as an active and durational engagement with the simple gesture of return, complicated by the infrastructure and legacies of US intervention.

Cevdet Erek: Americas

Cevdet Erek: Americas arranges five of Cevdet Erek’s site-specific sonic works developed in the last decade alongside a new commission for SculptureCenter. Reworking and rechanneling the murmurs of his previous installations into a new compilation, Erek will create a rhythmic structure that synchronizes with the textures of SculptureCenter’s labyrinthine lower level. His immersive sonic installations distribute multiple frequencies that hold fragmentary chords, custom-built speakers amplify architectural features, and refashioned measuring rulers quantify and make physical beats of time. His site-specific commission will consider two possibly overlapping histories rooted in New York City: the emergence of heavy underground music in the 1980s and Sound/Art, a 1984 exhibition at SculptureCenter that contributed to the definition of sound art as a genre.

Yining Fei: Feral Sediment

Yining Fei: Feral Sediment centers on the milu, a rare species of deer native to China, whose survival has been mediated by captivity, diplomacy, and modern infrastructure. The exhibition originates in Fei’s observations of the morphological similarities between the lining of the deer’s digestive organs and aerial views of industrialized landscapes, a coincidence that opens an inquiry into what separates wildness from domestication. Working across sculpture, moving image, and installation, Fei constructs the deer’s interior organs as a cosmos in miniature, a space where the biological and the artificial, the intimate and the planetary, converge.

Future exhibitions
In January 2027, SculptureCenter will open a solo exhibition by Berenice Olmedo on our ground floor that expands her study of machinic bodies. In May 2027, we’ll present Olga Balema’s first major solo institutional exhibition in the US. Additional programs and exhibitions will be announced at a future date.
