Anna Tsouhlarakis: Indigenous Irregularities

Join Anna Tsouhlarakis, the 2026 Edgar Heap of Birds Family Artist-in-Residence at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, for a public lecture on her interdisciplinary practice and her exhibition, Indigenous Irregularities, now on view at Temple Contemporary.

Tsouhlarakis’ residency marks the second annual presentation of work by the Edgar Heap of Birds Family Artist-in-Residence. During her residency, Tsouhlarakis ventured into glass for the first time, working alongside Tyler’s students and faculty to experiment with a new material and create work for Indigenous Irregularities.

The resulting exhibition brings together text collages and newly created sculptures that explore the unexpected, contradictory and improvised aspects of contemporary Native experience. Tsouhlarakis embraces irregularity as both a formal strategy and a conceptual framework, repurposing materials and combining disparate visual languages to challenge fixed narratives surrounding Indigenous histories, aesthetics and cultural authenticity.

Established through a gift from Tyler alum Edgar Heap of Birds (MFA ’79), the annual residency reflects his longstanding commitment to creating opportunities for meaningful exchange between established practitioners and the next generation of artists.

Indigenous Irregularities: Anna Tsouhlarakis is on view through December 5, 2026, in the Edgar Heap of Birds Family Gallery at Temple Contemporary.
