Bùi Quý Sơn, Paul-Antoine Lucas, and Céline Zimmer: Excess!

Excess! On the Overconsumption of Living Space, a project by Bùi Quý Sơn, Paul-Antoine Lucas, and Céline Zimmer, has been unanimously selected by an international jury to represent the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.

The Pavilion
The curatorial proposal for the Luxembourg Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2027 addresses the inequitable (over)consumption and distribution of living space as a sample of broader habits of excess that contribute to the current housing and ecological crises. Revealing a dissonant dialogue between the two distinct contexts of Luxembourg and Vietnam, the project seeks to produce critical, relational, and constructive knowledge about spatial consumption.

Emerging from Luxembourg’s strikingly high per capita housing surface, Excess! expands on the implications of demographic and economic growth when materialized in a world of finite ecological resources. To this end, next year’s Luxembourg Pavilion will experiment with sharing space and resources with Vietnam to open up conversations and learn from intersecting perspectives.

Meet the team
Bùi Quý Sơn is a Vietnamese architect, researcher, and co-founder of the critical spatial practice Exutoire based in Hanoi. His work explores social spatialities, the critical vernacular, collective pedagogies, and queer methodologies via design, building, curation, teaching, and publishing. Sơn graduated from the Royal Danish Academy and is currently pursuing a practice research doctoral degree at RMIT University. His ongoing thesis investigates an attitude toward making and stewarding critical social spaces. He has been a lecturer at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, TU Darmstadt, and INDA Chulalongkorn University.

Paul-Antoine Lucas is a Hanoi-based architect and researcher with an interest in housing, social justice through design, and queer theory in architecture. Paul-Antoine graduated from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and is currently a PhD candidate at RMIT University. Between 2020 and 2025, he taught at RMIT University Vietnam, TU Darmstadt, Chulalongkorn University, and AHO. Together with Bùi Quý Sơn, he co-founded in 2019 the queer critical spatial practice Exutoire. They published their first book in 2025 with Ruby Press, titled Housing, Micropolitics, and Pedagogies: Designing and Practicing Collectivity.

Céline Zimmer is a researcher, housing expert and activist from Luxembourg. She studied architecture in Trier and Hamburg and obtained her doctorate from the University of Luxembourg. Her research examines housing affordability and the potential of the cooperative housing model, a largely underexplored concept in Luxembourg’s politics. 
In March 2025, she curated the exhibition Our New Housing – An Initiative to Cooperate at LUCA, the Luxembourg Center for Architecture. In 2026, she founded Eist Neit Wunnen Agence, an agency promoting and facilitating the large-scale implementation of housing cooperatives in Luxembourg.
