Taubman College's new Master of Science in Architecture Design and Research: Advanced Design and Construction (MSADC) is a research and innovation-oriented degree focused on transforming the architectural construction industry via emerging technologies and new material systems. The program’s focus on construction speaks to the maturity of computational design and digital fabrication to now tackle real-world challenges in our built environment—recognizing that we can’t build in the same way that we have in the last century in light of the palpable effects of climate change, labor shortages, and shifts in how we live today and in the near future.
Building innovation
The degree empowers graduates to be at the forefront of construction innovation for both academic research and industry engagement. Students work collaboratively via full-scale prototyping, critically developing their projects at the intersection of computational design, sensing, data analysis, AI integration, automation/manufacturing, construction robotics, additive manufacturing, and circular systems for design for assembly/disassembly.
Training future leaders
This degree will prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to redefine the future of the AEC industry. The degree is a launchpad to careers in computational design in both architectural practice as well as emergent roles in fabrication firms deploying advanced technologies for building. Students are exposed to entrepreneurial opportunities through startup models and learn to navigate the changing AEC industry with dexterity and confidence. The program also prepares students who wish to pursue a PhD to define the scope for future research.
Apply now
To be eligible for admission, an applicant must have one of the following:
–A professional degree in architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch)—in progress or completed
–Pre-professional architecture degree (BS or BA in Architecture)—in progress or completed
–Non-professional degree (in progress or completed) in architecture or related fields of engineering, computer science, and product design plus evidence of research, creative, and/or professional work
–Professionals with experience working across the AEC fields (architecture, engineering, construction) looking to upskill are also welcome to apply provided they show evidence of creative and/or professional work.
–For pre-professional architecture degrees (BS or BA in Architecture)—in progress or completed, there is a dual degree option where one can get both their first professional degree in architecture (M.Arch) and the MSADC degree in two and a half years.
