LABoral Centro de Arte y Creacion Industrial launches its new Guest Artwork programme with a video installation coming from the NEWART foundation: Cambiantes (1976/2015), by Brazilian artist and dancer Analivia Cordeiro.
Considered a seminal work in the history of video art and video dance, Cambiantes will be exhibited at LABoral from October 2 until March 27. A pioneering work of video art in Brazil and one of the earliest international experiments in video dance, the piece explores the relationships between the body, movement, image and technology.
The three-channel video installation created in 2015 draws on the audiovisual material of the original Cambiantes video (1976), while incorporating a new edit and revisiting the spatial concept of the original work: a human-scale cube. Visitors can enter the projection space, where their own shadows enter into dialogue with the figures of the dancers in the video.
Through the Guest Artwork programme, LABoral incorporates works from different private and public collections into its programme, with the aim of presenting significant pieces that offer diverse perspectives on the relationship between contemporary art, technologies and social contexts, while addressing different geographies, historical periods and modes of production.
Analivia Cordeiro (Brazil, 1954) is a dancer, choreographer, multimedia artist, architect, and member of UNESCO's International Dance Council. Considered one of the pioneers of computer-supported dance and Latin American video art, she has created multimedia shows, videos, the app BodyWays, and the software Nota-Anna. She has participated in numerous collective and solo exhibitions around the world, and her works are part of prominent collections such as the Oskar Schlemmer Archive (Switzerland), MoMA (New York), and Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid).
The artist and LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial dedicate this exhibition to the memory of art curator and cultural manager Vicente Matallana—director of the BEEP Collection and the NEWART Foundation—one of the key advocates for digital art and a pivotal figure in the development of this exhibition, who passed away recently.
