The University at Buffalo Department of Art invites applications for its MFA in Studio Art degree.
The UB MFA is a two-year program in which students, faculty, visiting artists, and curators participate in an energetic, interdisciplinary dialogue around contemporary art. Students develop independent studio practices alongside thematic labs, research, academic electives, seminars, studio visits, group critiques, and exhibitions, while engaging with vibrant local and international arts communities. Our graduates go on to build acclaimed careers in the arts.
The Department of Art is situated within an “R1” designated research University, enabling access to knowledge bases across a wide range of creative and academic fields. The Department, located in the Center for the Arts, houses the Departments of Art, Media Study, Theater and Dance as well as the UB Art Galleries’ CFA Gallery.
Our curriculum encourages interdisciplinary studio practice and research. Each student works closely with a thesis committee of full-time faculty who support the development of their work through conceptual experimentation, intellectual exploration, critical thinking, and self-directed studio practice. This work culminates in a publicly presented thesis exhibition.
Our fully funded program offers teaching appointments to gain professional teaching experience, as well as health insurance. Funding includes full-tuition scholarships for all MFA students.
Each MFA candidate works in a spacious individual studio with access to extensive departmental facilities, including manual and digital fabrication tools, facilities for black-and-white, digital, and historical photographic processes, print media studios, and audio production equipment. Students also have access to Coalesce: Center for Biological Arts, an interdisciplinary art and science laboratory, and the Project Space for experimental exhibitions.
Department of Art MFA faculty advisors include Marc Böhlen, Becky Brown, Noah Breuer, Crystal Z. Campbell, Millie Chen, Maximilian Goldfarb, Berin Golonu, George Afedzi Hughes, Matt Kenyon, Joan Linder, John Opera, Reinhard Reitzenstein, Stephanie Rothenberg, Theo Triandos, Victoria Udondian, and Paul Vanouse.
The application deadline is Friday, January 15, 2027.
