The Department of Architecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture (arch.virginia.edu) welcomes applications for multiple faculty positions: tenured endowed position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor: the Commonwealth Professor of Architecture and Artificial Intelligence; tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor; and two early-career endowed faculty fellowships: The Michael Owen Jones and Robertson Fellowships.
We seek candidates with a transformative vision for architecture, articulated through a portfolio of innovative architectural design, scholarship, and teaching—particularly those with cross-disciplinary interests that connect architecture with landscape architecture, urban design, planning, history and theory, or fields beyond the profession, and that address critical issues of our time. As a vital member of this vibrant community, successful candidates will advance these aims through teaching, research, and collaboration.
Commonwealth Associate or Full Professor of Architecture and Artificial Intelligence
The Commonwealth Associate or Full Professor of Architecture and Artificial Intelligence is a tenured full-time faculty position. We seek a thought leader poised to define how artificial intelligence and advanced technology are transforming not only the tools of architectural practice, but the terms of the conversation itself. The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership in design, pedagogy, and research; work fluidly across disciplinary boundaries; and advance discourse on AI's use and consequence, both within the discipline and at the school.
UVA is deeply invested in multidisciplinary work at the frontier of advanced technology and artificial intelligence that builds on existing strengths across the institution. The University's substantial investments in this effort include high-performance computing infrastructure, international research partnerships, an expanding cohort of AI faculty and resources, and dedicated funding to support research tied to the Commonwealth professorship.
The application deadline is November 16, 2026. For more details, full qualification requirements and application instructions, visit: here.
Assistant Professor of Architecture (tenure-track)
The Assistant Professor of Architecture is a tenure-track faculty position. The successful applicant is expected to bring a strong pedagogical approach, the potential for design leadership within and beyond the discipline of architecture, a developing research agenda rooted in professional and/or academic practice, and a genuine interest in working and teaching across disciplinary boundaries.
This is a full-time appointment, with the expectation that faculty will reside in Charlottesville and actively engage with faculty, staff, and students at the University. Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop curriculum in collaboration with school leadership, serve on academic committees, support student success, and pursue an agenda of high-profile research, scholarship, or creative production. Candidates should show clear potential to develop a rigorous, design-driven body of research and creative work over the course of their career at UVA.

Michael Owen Jones and Robertson Research/Teaching Fellows, Assistant Professor (General Faculty)
We seek applicants for the Michael Owen Jones and Robertson Fellowships, two non-tenure-track Assistant Professor General Faculty positions that support both research and teaching for emerging practitioners, scholars, or architects seeking to expand their body of work and engage in academia.
These are full-time, two-year appointments, with the expectation that fellows will reside in Charlottesville and actively engage with faculty, staff, and students at the University. Fellows are expected to develop a research project and to present the results of their work in the form of an exhibition in the fall of their second year and are required to teach four courses per year.
The Fellowships are structured to provide a gateway into academia and support the development of design research and teaching trajectories. We promote this by encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration, providing mentorship, and supporting research development within the school and across the university.
