About the artist
Dread Scott (b. 1965, Chicago, Illinois) is an interdisciplinary artist who for over three decades has made work that encourages viewers to re-examine cohering ideals of American society. In 1989, the US Congress outlawed one of his artworks and President Bush declared it “disgraceful” because of its transgressive use of the American flag. Dread became part of a landmark Supreme Court case when he and others burned flags on the steps of the Capitol. He has presented a TED talk on this subject.

He presented the All African People’s Consulate as part of La Biennale di Venezia in 2024. His art has been exhibited at MoMA/PS1, The Walker Art Center, Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort, Netherlands) the 2026 Biennale of Sydney and Cristin Tierney Gallery. It is included in the collections of Whitney Museum, the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art and has been featured on the covers of Artforum and on the front page of NYTimes.com. In 2019 he presented Slave Rebellion Reenactment, a community engaged project that reenacted the largest rebellion of enslaved people in US history. The project was featured in Vanity Fair, The New York Times, by Christiane Amanpour on CNN and highlighted by artnet.com as one of the most important artworks of the decade.

In 2023, Scott received the Abigail Cohen Rome Prize. Two years earlier he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, Frieze Impact Prize and a Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was the 2019 Open Society Foundations Soros Equality Fellow and has received fellowships from United States Artists and Creative Capital Foundation.

His work asks viewers to look soberly at America’s past and our present. Writing about his art in The New York Times, Angelica Rogers wrote “…it was difficult to look away from the flag’s blocky, capitalized type. ‘A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday.’ It shouted the words so matter-of-factly that I felt myself physically flinch.” His studio is in Brooklyn, New York.

About the Yaseen Lectures on the Fine Arts
This lecture series, which began in 1974, was endowed by the late Leonard C. Yaseen and his wife Helen, former residents of Larchmont, New York, who financed a similar series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Featured speakers have included Gordon Parks, Claes Oldenburg, Maya Angelou, Faith Ringgold, Chuck Close, John Shearer, Hank Willis Thomas, and Purchase College alumnus Fred Wilson. The legacy of the Yaseens’s gift continues today through the support of Roger Yaseen and his family in honor of his parents. The Yaseen Lectures on the Fine Arts Fund is stewarded by The New York Community Trust.
