Curatorial concept: Unknowns
For co-curators Mami Kataoka and Arja Miller, Unknowns grows from the recognition that humanity has always understood only a fraction of the world. Across cultures and generations, people have turned to spirituality, science, storytelling, and imagination to navigate what remains unknown.
Rather than treating the unknown as something to be overcome, Helsinki Biennial 2027 approaches it as a space of openness and exploration. The biennial brings together artistic practices that engage with what remains beyond certainty and comprehension. Particular attention is given to connections between Nordic and Asian cultures, mythologies, and ways of understanding the world.
Contemporary art in three distinctive settings
Helsinki Biennial 2027 unfolds across three distinct settings: the landscape of Vallisaari Island, the public space of Esplanade Park, and HAM Helsinki Art Museum. Together, these venues offer multiple ways to experience contemporary art in both natural and urban environments.
Designed with accessibility and visitor experience in mind, the biennial welcomes a broad audience, from residents and international visitors to art professionals.
Creating collaboration and lasting legacy
Helsinki Biennial is created through collaboration between artists, institutions, and partners in Finland and around the world. By bringing together diverse artistic perspectives, the biennial contributes to both the international visibility of Finnish contemporary art and Helsinki's role as a meeting place for contemporary art.
Through new commissions, long-term partnerships and responsible exhibition-making, Helsinki Biennial 2027 continues to build on the legacy of previous editions.
