Located in a unique building in central Oslo, Kunstnernes Hus is an artist-run organisation, a foundation which presents Norwegian and international contemporary art. Kunstnernes Hus has a rich history, continuously seeks to explore new ground, and has seen a formidable increase in both activity level and visitors in recent years.

Kunstnernes Hus is seeking a new director, to be employed from early spring 2017. We are looking for someone who will continue to develop Kunstnernes Hus as a vital, challenging, and sustainable meeting point for artists and the public. The director’s primary responsibility is to initiate and realize exhibitions and events programmes. The director is the public face of Kunstnernes Hus and reports to the board. The position is full-time (100%) for a fixed term of 4 years. The director has the ultimate responsibility for the artistic programme, the institution’s finances, and the staff.

 

Qualifications:
Strong strategic ability, with an eye towards sustaining and developing Kunstnernes Hus’ overall resources and potential in tandem with the board and the staff, and in accordance with the by-laws of Kunstnernes Hus' foundation.

Solid experience from similar institutions as an art professional and curator, as well as an extensive network within and knowledge of the international, Nordic, and Norwegian contemporary art scene.

Understanding of the building’s importance and both its current and long-term administrative needs, as well as a willingness to give priority to this area.

Experience with financial management is particularly required, as is institutional and managerial experience from the art field.

An ability to inspire and spread enthusiasm about the foundation both internally and externally, as well as experience from and interest in public outreach.

An interest for the political, historical, and artistic context that Kunstnernes Hus operates within, and an ability to articulate a clear viewpoint in relevant public debates.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in one Scandinavian language and English.

Kunstnernes Hus is an artist-run organisation, a foundation which presents Norwegian and international contemporary art, located in central Oslo right by the Palace Park. Kunstnernes Hus is widely regarded as one of the foremost architectural expressions of classical modernism in Norway. In addition to its exhibition rooms, the building also houses a new cinema and lecture hall, the Felix education and seminar room, the Torpedo art bookstore, and the Lofthus Samvirkelag restaurant. The building also hosts several other tenants, such as the Nordic art journal kunstkritikk.no and the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, which disposes of eight studios and the gallery Akademirommet, whose entrance is from the back of the house. Kunstnernes Hus has a rich history and continuously seeks to explore new ground, and has recently witnessed a formidable increase in both activity level and visitors.
