The Frans Hals Museum | De Hallen Haarlem is seeking a:
Curator of Contemporary Art
32 hrs per week
The Frans Hals Museum | De Hallen Haarlem enjoys international renown, largely due to its outstanding collection of Haarlem Masters from the 16th and 17th century, including the world’s largest collection of Frans Hals paintings, and its innovative exhibitions of contemporary art. The museum is situated in two atmospheric 17th century buildings and aims to allow the public to become familiar with the unprecedented bourgeoning of painting during the Golden Age, the oeuvre of the Dutch Master Frans Hals and with international developments in contemporary visual art.
The museum devotes special attention to the concept of “transhistorical curating” and actively establishes links between tradition and innovation, past and present, old and contemporary art. In the coming years, the substantive accent lies on further research and implementation of the notion of “The Transhistorical Museum”: the development of a globalist post-colonial perspective on the Golden Age and the establishment of the Frans Hals Expertise Centre.
The Curator of Contemporary Art collaborates closely with the director, curators and associate curators of old art and modern art to realise the programme of exhibitions, projects and discursive events.
He or she manages the collections, contributes to their permanent display and to their expansion through acquisitions and the advocacy of donations. The curator conceives and realizes exhibitions and transdisciplinary or cross historical projects, publications, lectures and conferences and in that framework initiates, develops and directs art-historical research.
For assigned exhibitions he or she functions as a project manager responsible for the procedural, organizational, substantive, and budget management. Additionally he or she actively contributes to fundraising by representational activities and providing substantive input based on his or her own area of expertise.
As a curious and collaborative colleague he or she maintains optimal relations with professional (national and international) in the museum world, university researchers, academics, collectors, journalists, dealers etc.
We expect an inspirational teamplayer with excellent communication and organizational skills, with a cricital and inquisitive mind, who has preferably completed a university education in Art History. He or she has expertise in contemporary art with proven experience in scientific art-historical research and relevant publications in this field. We are seeking for a curator who keeps abreast of current developments in the field and has an explicit interest in establishing links between art forms from different eras (transhistorical curating) and geographical areas. Our candidate has a proven (inter)national network at his or her disposal; a global perspective on art and is prepared to engage with a local context. He or she possess excellent digital skills and speaks and writes Dutch and English fluently.
We offer an independent and challenging position in a historical building with friendly and dynamic colleagues. The organization of the museum consists of 42 employees divided into five departments: Collections, Exhibitions Production, Public Affairs, Finance and Operations controlled by a Management Team with heads of departments, deputy director and a general director. The position is remunerated in scale 10a, a maximum of 4,412 EUR gross for a 36-hour week. We offer a temporary contract for a year. An assessment is included in the procedure.
