How do artists who work with moving images observe reality through the magnifying glass of fiction and narration? How do they use narration to fictionalize the world?

The third edition of KINO DER KUNST, a unique worldwide mixture of art exhibition and film festival, will place special emphasis on how contemporary artists view our rapidly changing reality. The festival will be held from April 19 to 23, 2017 in movie theaters, museums and galleries throughout Munich, including in the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Brandhorst Museum, the Kunstverein München, the Espace culturel Louis Vuitton and the University of Film and Television.

The program's centerpiece is an International Competition between new long and short fiction films by artists from all over the world. Several juries of renowned artists, movie actors and curators will award prizes totaling 45,000 EUR. Former jury members have included Amira Casar, Yang Fudong, Isaac Julien, Jesper Just, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Cindy Sherman. This year, KINO DER KUNST will invite the future M+ Museum from Hong Kong—which is still under construction—to cooperate at an institutional level and help choose artists' films from China for the International Competition. Starting with Julian Rosefeldt's multi-channel installation Manifesto starring Cate Blanchett, museum presentations will include (among others) Pipilotti Rist's Himalaya Goldstein's Living Room or works by Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys. An homage with films and photos will honor the legendary director of photography Ed Lachman (Far from Heaven, I'm not there, Carol), and a special symposium will treat the issues of archiving and restoring works of media art.

KINO DER KUNST is designed to be a showcase for current art trends and an international meeting point for artists, curators and the public. It focuses on works by contemporary artists who take fiction and narration beyond conventional limits, presenting film screenings, multi-channel installations, talks, round-tables and special surveys. In addition, a project pitch has been established to reward and support emerging artists and filmmakers.

The open call for entries of the International Competition is open until December 15, 2016. Further information on KINO DER KUNST and on film submission is available at
