“The New New Left,” the theme of this issue, is not entirely “new new” as it indeed shares some concerns with the old anti-capitalist Left—namely, an insistence on a theoretical analysis of capitalism and the undue price many in such a system pay. But as the traditional discourses and strategies of the Left (workerism, identity politics, avant-gardist tricksterism, etc.) have been taken up by anti-progressive outlets, it has become increasingly complicated to locate a Left stance from which to effectively speak and act. This issue explores the affective mechanisms and media strategies that are producing our current political field: from the rise of viral content (memes) to the roll of celebrity in the new “establishment Left” to the politicization of damaged pride toward racist and/or nationalist ends. The issue also features the words of several artists commenting on the conditions of cultural labor in our post-millennial, post-financial crisis, post-Brexit/Trump, now.
