Jake and Dinos Chapman: In the Realm of the Senseless
February 10–May 7, 2017
Curator: Nick Hackworth
In the Realm of the Senseless marks Jake and Dinos Chapman’s first solo exhibition in Turkey. Bringing together major works from a number of their iconic series including “Hell,” “The Chapman Family Collection” and “One Day You Will No Longer Be Loved,” alongside new and rarely seen works, the exhibition offers an overview of the Chapmans’ virulently pessimistic art and thought. Deploying humour and a perverse semiotics to undercut and satirise many of the unthinking beliefs that animate contemporary culture, Jake and Dinos Chapman’s is amongst the most challenging of contemporary art practices.
Ways of Seeing
June 2–August 20, 2017
Curators: Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath
Taking its cue from Ways of Seeing (1972), John Berger’s critical text on visual culture, this group exhibition explores the various formalistic strategies that artists employ to re-configure our perception of the world. Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, the exhibition posits the surface of the artwork as a space of encounter between the internal aesthetic deliberations of the artist’s creative process and the external often-conditioned gaze of the viewer. Ways of Seeing presents contemporary paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos, alongside artworks that span several centuries. It unfolds along a non-linear temporal thread whereby the viewer’s desire to “understand through seeing” is constantly challenged through artworks that refuse to operate along the rigidity of styles, genres, and so-called “isms.” In doing so, we are reminded that “the relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.” It is in this inherently political process of searching, that we begin to discover several ways of seeing…
A solo exhibition by CANAN
September 13–December 24, 2017
Curator: Nazlı Gürlek
CANAN’s solo exhibition at Arter will feature new and existing works produced since late 1990s up until today. CANAN’s works often involve the use of her own body to underlie the ways in which the personal meets the political as well as take the form of complex spatial installations that celebrate the freedom of suppressed individuals and novel ways of expression. This survey exhibition will offer a large overview of the artist’s practice that covers a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, performance, photography, print, video, textual and spatial installations as well as traditional forms of expression such as miniature and embroidery.
About Arter
An initiative of the Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKF), Arter opened in 2010 to offer a sustainable infrastructure for producing and exhibiting contemporary art.
Arter has been presenting solo and group exhibitions with the aim of providing a platform of visibility for artistic practices and encouraging production of contemporary artworks through the support it provides in the context of these exhibitions. Arter’s programme also features publications that accompany each exhibition.
The most recent major cultural project of the Vehbi Koç Foundation is the establishment of a contemporary art museum in Istanbul’s Dolapdere district, close to the city centre. Conceptualised as a multidisciplinary cultural and educational hub, the museum will feature exhibitions from but not limited to the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection and multi-disciplinary events throughout the year, furthering Arter’s ongoing programme.
