In much of the contemporary world, indoor comfort has come to mean sealed facades, mechanical cooling, artificial lighting, and the maintenance of a constant internal temperature regardless of season or geography. It is a comfort stabilized by energy and made possible by carbon.
In the tropics, this understanding of comfort did not originate from our climate. It was imported alongside modern construction technologies and aspirations of global sameness. Having practiced in Nigeria for nearly two decades after training in the United Kingdom, I have seen how this imported notion of “universal” comfort produces a quiet but profound dependency on systems that replace, rather than work with the climate.
The question posed by a post-carbon future is therefore not simply how we will cool buildings without fossil fuels. The deeper question is whether we misunderstood comfort in the first place. The New Alternative Nigerian Architecture is a movement and framework for practice that sees comfort not as mechanical conquest but as continuous environmental negotiation.



Redefining Comfort in the Tropics
Before the widespread adoption of air conditioning, buildings across West Africa were shaped by climate intelligence rather than mechanical systems. Thick earthen walls moderated heat gain. Deep verandas shaded openings and created transitional zones between inside and outside. Courtyards allowed air to circulate while offering protected outdoor space. Roof overhangs controlled rain and sun, while high ceilings encouraged the natural stratification of hot air. Comfort was not about eliminating heat; it was about managing it.
Materials played an active role in this negotiation. Laterite and earth absorbed heat during the day and released it slowly at night. Lime plasters allowed walls to breathe. Timber screens filtered light and encouraged cross ventilation. Interiors were rarely isolated from exterior conditions; they were tuned to them.
Equally important were behavioral patterns. Clothing was light. Windows remained open. Daily rhythms acknowledged the midday heat. Architecture and habit worked together. Carbon-based cooling disrupted this relationship. It promised uniformity, yet uniformity is energy-intensive and inherently fragile.
In recent projects, we have attempted to reinterpret traditional principles without romanticizing them. We treat these methods not as nostalgic gestures, but as performance-based strategies for a carbon-constrained world. At the Abijo Mosque (2020), for instance, laterite was used as thermal mass. The textured laterite Tyrolean finish reduces glare, absorbs heat, and requires minimal maintenance in a coastal climate.
The building relies primarily on natural ventilation. Volume, orientation, wall thickness, and carefully positioned openings create a moderated interior environment suitable for worship without dependence on full mechanical cooling. Comfort here is spatial and atmospheric. It emerges from proportion, material depth, and airflow rather than from hidden ducts.
The MAD House (2023) was constructed from shipping containers, an industrial typology that is thermally hostile in the tropics. Containers trap heat and amplify it. Instead of relying solely on high-carbon insulation systems, their internal surfaces were lined with laterite. The earth layer functions as a thermal buffer, transforming a metal shell into a moderated environment.
This was both a technical and philosophical gesture. It asked whether local earth could compete with imported insulation. In the Nigerian climate, it can. The lesson is simple. Passive intelligence should always be prioritized before mechanical compensation.

Material as Environmental Intelligence
In the work of Baba Demas Nwoko, materials are not decorative choices; they are climatic instruments. His buildings demonstrate how earth, brick, and carefully shaded spaces can produce environments that feel grounded, cool, and dignified without technological excess.
His buildings teach restraint: the discipline to allow material to speak; the patience to work with what is available locally; the understanding that architecture must emerge from soil, craft, and climate rather than aspiration alone. But there is also a deeper lesson. Modernity in Africa does not require imitation; it requires interpretation.
Local materials are often dismissed as primitive or inefficient. Yet many possess low embodied carbon, are locally sourced, and can be maintained with minimal technological input. Laterite, compressed earth blocks, clay tiles, timber screens, and lime plasters are not nostalgic materials. They are environmental devices. A thick wall stores thermal energy. A veranda shades and cools. A perforated screen diffuses glare and encourages air movement.
In a post-carbon future, interiors in the tropics must rediscover this layered intelligence. Mechanical systems may still play a role, but they should support rather than replace passive strategies. To live indoors after carbon is not to abandon comfort, but to redefine it as adaptive rather than fixed.
Yet architecture alone cannot resolve the carbon question. Behavior must also shift. Windows must open. Fans can replace air conditioning in many situations. Shaded transitional spaces should be reintroduced as daily living zones. Clothing and social rhythms must acknowledge climate. For decades, architects have designed buildings that allow occupants to ignore their environment. Post-carbon living will require buildings that reintroduce awareness. This is not regression, it is recalibration.
Toward a New Regional Modernity
One of the most persistent illusions in tropical architecture is that modernity has a universal aesthetic. Glass towers in Lagos emulate London or Dubai without acknowledging solar intensity, power instability, or maintenance realities. Such buildings are thermally dependent. They require constant energy input to sustain comfort.
In a carbon-constrained future, dependency becomes vulnerability. As a result, a regional modernity needs to emerge: one that integrates technology where necessary but privileges passive intelligence first; one that recognizes climate not as an obstacle, but as a design partner.
Living indoors after carbon in the tropics may not look dramatic. In fact, it may look familiar. It may mean thicker walls, shaded courts, breathable finishes, cross-ventilation, and layered thresholds. It may mean interiors that fluctuate gently with the day rather than remain fixed at an artificial point.
This shift requires us to look closer at our own philosophical foundations. In the Yoruba worldview, meaning is fundamentally relational. The concept of Iwa is often translated as character, but more deeply refers to the essence of being. Iwa is not something an object possesses in isolation: it is revealed through its relationship with others and its alignment with the natural order.
When applied to the built environment, a building should not be an absolute, hermetically sealed entity. It should possess its own character by negotiating with the Sun, the wind, and the people who inhabit it. Architecture, in this sense, becomes an act of Oju-Inu, or inner sight: the ability to look beyond the surface of imported materials and recognize the latent potential in the soil and climate beneath our feet.
Comfort, therefore, is not a universal constant to be measured by a digital thermostat. It is a lived experience negotiated between body, material, air, and habit. The challenge is not to invent something entirely new. It is to reinterpret what was always available to us and deploy it consciously in a world that can no longer afford indifference to carbon.
If we approach the tropics with humility rather than mimicry, the post-carbon interior is not a sacrifice. Rather, it is an opportunity to build with clarity, restraint, and responsibility. Perhaps, in doing so, we discover that comfort was never about uniformity. It was about relationships.
