With its three buildings at two different locations, the Deichtorhallen Hamburg is one of the largest exhibition venues for contemporary art and photography in Europe. The two historical main buildings of the Hall for Contemporary Art and the House of Photgraphy feature an impressive, open steel and glass architecture and are now used to host major international exhibitions.  Since 2011 the Deichtorhallen also includes the Falckenberg Collection branch in Hamburg-Harburg.

In the Hall for Contemporary Art—spanning 3800 square meters—, contemporary art has been presented here in major exhibition projects. The focus is on solo exhibitions by internationally renowned painters and sculptors. The projects are mostly developed on site in close cooperation with the artists. In addition, thematic and group exhibitions as well as major international art collections are shown.

The Falckenberg Collection comprises some 2000 works of contemporary art. Its focus is on German and American contemporary art from the past 30 years. The generous spaces make it possible to present larger installations and multimedia projects by artists such as John Bock, General Idea, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mike Kelley, Jon Kessler, Sarah Lucas, Jonathan Meese, and Gregor Schneider. In addition to the collection, temporary exhibitions are also regularly shown here.
