Yokohama Triennale

The Yokohama Triennale is a tri-annual exhibition of contemporary art held in Yokohama, featuring both internationally renowned and up-and-coming artists, and presenting the latest trends and expressions in contemporary art.

Yokohama was one of the first commercial ports that Japan opened to the world in 1859 after 200 years of seclusion, leading the country through its modernization. Today, it is one of the largest cities in Japan, with a population of 3.7 million people, including over 100 thousand non-Japanese residents from approximately 160 countries and regions.

Since its inauguration in 2001, the Yokohama Triennale has addressed the relationships between Japan and the world, and the individual and society, and reexamined the social role of art from a variety of perspectives, in response to a world in constant flux.

The first three editions were primarily organized by the Japan Foundation. From the fourth edition in 2011, the City of Yokohama and the Agency for Cultural Affairs became its main funder, and the Yokohama Museum of Art, its host and primary venue. Each edition is led by a different artistic director selected by the Organizing Committee for Yokohama Triennale.
