Skowhegan promotes the exchange of knowledge, skills, and care among artists.

The heart of Skowhegan is our summer school in Maine, founded by artists in 1946. Emerging artists who create in all forms and come from diverse backgrounds live and work together as a community of peers in dialogue with resident and visiting faculty artists. Our campus is a place where we coexist in generosity, self-discovery, curiosity, and discrepancy in order to create, experience, and understand art.

When summer ends, we continue our mission through a variety of programs for wider audiences that use the School as a source of inspiration and provocation.

*While we still keep the founding name “Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture,” we understand art in a multidisciplinary way, and welcome artists working in all disciplines.
