Skowhegan promotes the exchange of knowledge, skills, and care among artists.
The heart of Skowhegan is our summer school in Maine, founded by artists in 1946. Each year, a group of about sixty-five emerging artists from around the world and a new cohort of resident and visiting faculty and staff engage in an experimental framework of learning that promotes the sharing of knowledge and skills between artists. With the aim of encouraging exchange and openness, we provide a transversal and intergenerational environment for production, risk taking, research, conversations, and critical thinking. During the program, each individual’s practice influences the collective endeavor as we explore together what “making” means to artists.
When summer ends, we continue our mission through a variety of programs for wider audiences that use the School as a source of inspiration and provocation.
*While we still keep the founding name “Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture,” we understand art in a multidisciplinary way, and welcome artists working in all disciplines.
