The Academy of Arts in Tromsø is a department at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. We offer studies within Creative Writing (taught in Norwegian), Landscape Architecture and Art.
The MLA program started as a pilot in 2013 in collaboration with The Oslo School of Architecture, AHO. From 2022 UiT became owner of the program. An integrated five-year master’s degree taught in Norwegian started in 2018.
The BFA program was established in 2007, our international MFA program started in 2012, and since 2013 the Academy has also hired PhD students in artistic research.
As the Academy accepts only a small number of students into its study programmes each year, the study environment is personal and intimate, allowing the students a lot of freedom and study time to develop their individual projects and interests.
Our students, guest teachers and teatchers are recruited internationally, which mirrors the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the small, yet culturally vibrant city of Tromsø. Furthermore, it is the department’s interest to maintain a high international level while taking the geopolitical and cultural characteristics into account, which are provided by the Academy’s location in the north of the country.
