“Practice is a set of relays from one theoretical point to another, and theory is a relay from one practice to another. No theory can develop without eventually encountering a wall, and practice is necessary for piercing this wall.” —Gilles Deleuze

Art, Theory, Practice, (A,T,P,) is the department of art at Northwestern University. Our acclaimed faculty of practicing artists and critics closely work with students at the undergraduate and graduate level. We are committed to helping students develop into active, independent, and critical contributors to their chosen fields. Undergraduate classes are small hands-on studios and seminars that foster creative thinking for both majors and non-majors. Our graduate program is an intense critique-based experience that is fully funded for every student. The Evanston campus rests on the shore of Lake Michigan, twelve miles north of downtown Chicago, on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa as well as the Menominee, Miami and Ho-Chunk nations.
