The Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung / Berlin Artistic Research Programme supports artists across disciplines through fellowships, production funding, and a research community that fosters exchange among the participants. Public programming – including insights into the funded projects – further contributes to debates in and around the field of artistic research, extending this community to wider audiences and advocating for an on-going unfolding of practices and forms.
With this, the programme responds to the growing interest in artistic research and the increasing role of art in the production of knowledge and its transfer into society. Whereas in recent years PhD programmes for artists have been established at universities and art academies internationally, the Grant Programme aims to facilitate research in the arts beyond academic qualification programmes.
Every two years, the Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung awards 13 grants to artists conducting research in the fields of fine art, film/video, literature, music, dance and theatre, as well as interdisciplinary projects. Over the course of the two years, each recipient can claim an additional project budget. Funds are also available for a joint public programme and activities such as workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances or publications.
The Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung was launched in 2020 by the Society for Artistic Research in Germany (Gesellschaft für künstlerische Forschung in Deutschland, gkfd) with funds provided by the Berlin Senate for Culture and Social Cohesion.
