BELEK, ‘gift’ in Kyrgyz, is the project of the Pavilion of the Kyrgyz Republic at the 61st International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Geraldine Leardi.
The immersive installation in the Ex Chiesa di Santa Caterina (Convitto Foscarini, Cannaregio) brings together monumental sculpture in unfired clay, alongside painting, pigment prints and video. The project centres on water, understood both as a gift and as a political question; on Kok-Boru, the Kyrgyz equestrian game, as a living system in motion; and on memory as physical material. Sculptures from the TULPAR BATYR cycle are part of the BELEK exhibition; TULPAR BATYR II is installed outside the pavilion, on Campo dei Gesuiti. BELEK marks the beginning of MANUPORT, the third part of Morosov’s trilogy after PONTIFEX MAXIMVS and EXODUS.
