Museum Brandhorst

Opened in 2009, Museum Brandhorst is the youngest institution of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. Since its opening, the museum has successfully positioned itself as an important site for contemporary art within Germany. Both its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions are devoted to showcasing contemporary art, placing particular emphasis on in-depth explorations of artists and addressing current thematic concerns. The museum houses by far the largest collection of works by Andy Warhol in Europe. It is also unique internationally for its focus on Cy Twombly’s oeuvre. His monumental “Lepanto” cycle (2001) is on permanent display in a room that was designed especially according to the artist’s wishes.
