Herbert Foundation is a space for contemporary art holding the art collection and archives of Annick and Anton Herbert.
The collection focuses on the artistic developments in the periods around 1968 and 1989 and holds the work of some fifty artists, representing such international movements as Conceptual Art, Minimal Art and Arte Povera, but also the multimedia art of the 80s and 90s.
The archive, assembled around the collection, contains over 30,000 artefacts, including rare artists’ books, magazines, invitation cards, posters, photos, and audio and video recordings.
Herbert Foundation holds works and documents from Marcel Broodthaers, Bruce Nauman, Daniel Buren, Carl Andre, Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Gilbert & George, Gerhard Richter, Dan Graham, Jan Dibbets, Luciano Fabro and Mario Merz. The second generation, which became part of the collection from the 1980s onwards, includes Thomas Schütte, Reinhard Mucha, Jan Vercruysse, Franz West, Mike Kelley, Martin Kippenberger and Heimo Zobernig, amongst others.
The heritage site of Herbert Foundation is located in the city center of Ghent. It comprises industrial buildings that offer more than 6,000 m² of exhibition space and is surrounded by a green garden.
We offer a changing programme of exhibitions and events that explore the collection, but also situate it in the here and now. Herbert Foundation can be visited individually or by means of a group visit with one of our guides.
