The Heidi Horten Collection – A New Cultural Landmark in Vienna
Located in the heart of Vienna, right next to the State Opera, the Heidi Horten Collection combines spectacular architecture with masterpieces by Klimt, Picasso, and Warhol. This private museum, opened in summer 2022, fulfills the vision of a passionate collector and showcases art of international significance.
With great dedication, Heidi Horten (1941–2022), born in Vienna, built an outstanding collection over decades. She assembled hundreds of paintings, sculptures, and graphic works that provide an impressive overview of 20th and 21st-century art.
A pivotal moment in her collecting journey came with the acquisition of around 30 masterpieces of modern and contemporary art at a London auction, instantly elevating the collection’s art-historical importance. This expanded the collection to include major artists such as Renoir, Miró, Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Magritte, Schiele, Fontana, Bacon, and Baselitz.
In the following years, Heidi Horten established a strong focus on Pop Art with works by Warhol and Lichtenstein, further enriching the collection with groundbreaking pieces by Hirst, Polke, and Richter. Today, the Heidi Horten Collection encompasses not only paintings and graphic art but also an impressive sculpture park showcased in the newly opened museum.
Since autumn 2024, a permanent exhibition featuring 60 masterpieces from the collection has been on display on the ground floor. The upper two floors host biannual special exhibitions that draw inspiration from the themes of the collection and are enriched with prestigious loans, offering ever-changing perspectives on modern and contemporary art.
