The CajaCanarias Foundation is hosting the exhibition “La Torre de las Nubes” (The Tower of Clouds) through October 26, 2025. Curated by Gabriel Roca, this groundbreaking project is more than a traditional exhibition; it proposes a "temporary observatory" where art and science converge to make environmental changes in Teide National Park a tangible, experiential reality.
Developed by Teidelab, a framework initiative by Volcano Teide to create cultural and scientific content about the Park, the exhibition is realized with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the University of La Laguna (ULL), astrophotographer Daniel López, and international scientists. It reflects on how climate change is redrawing the living conditions of this unique environment.
Rather than merely illustrating data, the works extend research protocols into the language of installation and moving image. It features cameras documenting the sea of clouds' daily height, instruments measuring how endemic leaves capture water from fog, and CGI reconstructions of volcanic collapses by VFX studio BlackRelic. An immersive dome allows vulcanologist Valentín Troll to guide visitors through the experience of being at Teide's summit, translating science into a sensory journey.
"The goal is to allow visitors to feel the science, not just read about it," said curator Gabriel Roca. "By transforming data into installations and immersive narratives, we create a direct emotional and intellectual connection to the fragile ecosystem of Teide.”
The exhibition unfolds across five modules covering volcanology, meteorology, high-mountain flora, and observation technology.
1 Teide Cloud Laboratory with José Luis Martín Esquivel (Teide National Park) and astrophotographer Daniel López, presents a decade-long archive capturing the sea of clouds and seasonal change.
2 Plant Ecophysiology with Águeda González (ULL), explores how high-mountain species adapt to extreme conditions through innovative measurement of hidden water sources.
3 The Tower of Clouds with Carlos Torres (AEMET Izaña Observatory), highlights global atmospheric research on greenhouse gases, aerosols, and Saharan dust.
4 Historic Cable Car Cabin, a restored original cabin, reflects on the history and present of Volcano Teide.
5 Teide 360° with vulcanologists Valentín Troll (Uppsala University) and Juan Carlos Carracedo (CSIC), is an immersive dome experience narrating the dramatic geological processes that shaped the mountain.
A full program of scientific talks and workshops will be held from October 21 to 23, 2025, featuring national and international experts. The program includes Valentín R. González Rodríguez (Associate Professor, ULL), Beatriz Fernández Marín (Senior Ramón y Cajal Researcher, University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU), Stefan Mayr (Professor, University of Innsbruck, Austria), Jaume Flexas Sans (Professor, University of the Balearic Islands, Spain), Matthew Robson (Professor, University of Cumbria, UK), and José Ignacio García Plazaola (Associate Professor, University of the Basque Country, UPV/EHU, Spain). With simultaneous Spanish–English interpretation and live streaming.
