We believe that the world has no single center, but is one vast network in which everything influences everything else. We explore the world around us and seek to better understand it through our collection and through our exhibitions and programming. At all Wereldmuseum locations – in Amsterdam, Leiden, Nijmegen, and Rotterdam – the focus is on themes that affect our everyday lives.
Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is housed in an impressive national monument. It was built in 1926 and is located on the Oosterpark. The imposing central Light Hall offers a panoramic view of what the museum has to offer: three permanent exhibitions, multiple temporary exhibitions, and Wereldmuseum Junior. The museum has a colonial history. Colonialism and its impact are therefore important themes within this museum location. But also topics such as global trade, consumption, migration, climate change, and urbanization are important and fitting for a global city like Amsterdam. In the exhibitions and programming, connections are always made between historical context and current, global themes.
