Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka (MMSU)

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Muzej moderne i suvremene umjetnosti, MMSU) in Croatia is a prominent cultural institution located on the country’s coast, in the port city of Rijeka. It is dedicated to the collection, research, preservation, and exhibition of modern and contemporary art. Established in 1948, on the wave of institution-building in the new country of Yugoslavia, MMSU today stands as one of Croatia’s leading art museums and plays a crucial role in promoting and preserving both Croatian and international contemporary art. Historically, it hosted one of the first group exhibitions of abstract art in Yugoslavia, Salon 54. The museum’s collection includes a wide range of artworks, from paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations and various forms of contemporary visual art. It encompasses works by Croatian and international artists from the 20th century to the present day. In 2017, MMSU moved to its current venue, the refurbished premises of the former Rikard Benčić industrial complex, helping to shape a new cultural district in Rijeka.
