Institut Valencià d’Art Modern (IVAM)

The IVAM (Valencia Institute of Modern Art) is the cultural flagship of the Valencian Community and one of the leading institutions for modern and contemporary art. Inaugurated in 1989, it was the first museum of modern art in Spain and is one of the few that has paid special attention to the historical European avant-garde. Its collection is a privileged base from which to review the modern project of the 20th century, essential to understand the 21st century. 

It occupies a surface area of 18,200 m2 and houses eight galleries dedicated to the collections of the museum and to temporary exhibitions. One of them, the Sala de la Muralla, which has an independent access, shows the foundations of the old medieval wall built in the second half of the 14th century.

Its rooms permanently exhibit different studies on the work of the two pillars of its collection: Julio González (1876-1942) and Ignacio Pinazo  (1849-1916). Temporary exhibitions of national and international artists and pieces from the museum’s collection can also be seen.

The IVAM’s collection covers a wide chronological range. It ranges from the historical avant-garde in 1914 to the contemporary forms of today, with important authors such as James Rosenquist, Richard Hamilton, Robert Rauschenberg, Tony Cragg, Carmen Calvo, Fernando Arroyo, Antoni Tàpies, Julio González, Yves Klein, Zoran Music, Manolo Valdés, Equipo Crónica, Equipo Realidad, Jean Dubuffet, Gilian Wearing, Mona Hatoum, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Jacques Lipchitz, Rodchenko, Alexander Calder, Per Kirkeby or James Turrell.

With an inclusive and collaborative methodology, IVAM also organises cultural activities and mediation actions for visitors of all ages, which seek to enrich and improve the public’s experience in the museum.
