The Portugal Pavilion provides a platform for Portuguese artists to present their work to an international audience, offering insights into the country's contemporary art scene and cultural perspectives.
Portugal has participated regularly in the Venice Biennale since the 1980s; without a permanent Giardini pavilion, its official representation is largely nomadic. This year’s exhibition takes place at Fondaco Marcello (from the Arabic funduq), a merchant warehouse on the Grand Canal historically linked to the storage and trade of goods such as tobacco and silk. Previous Portuguese presentations hosted here include Ângela Ferreira (2007), Eduardo Souto de Moura & Ângelo de Sousa (2008, the first distinguished with the Golden Lion, later in 2018), João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva (2009), and Francisco Tropa (2011), with a more recent return for Paraíso, hoje. (Architecture Biennale, 2025).
