Bar Laika is proud to present Travel Songs by our neighbor Jonas Mekas.

Drawn together from two decades of itinerant shooting in Europe, Travel Songs (1967-1981, 25 minutes) evokes Jonas Mekas' improvisatory approach to sightseeing, with Assisi, Moscow, and Stockholm all filtered through his singularly animated lens. Though tuned to fine-grained particularities of landscape and culture, Travel Songs is finally a testament to the razzle-dazzle Mekas seems to find no matter where he goes.

Jonas Mekas is a Lithuanian American filmmaker, poet and artist who has often been called "the godfather of American avant-garde cinema". His work has been exhibited in museums and festivals worldwide. Mekas lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Jonas Mekas (1922–2019) was a Lithuanian-born filmmaker, poet, and critic, and a central figure in American avant-garde cinema. After arriving in New York as a refugee in 1949, he began recording everyday life, pioneering a diaristic approach to filmmaking. He championed independent cinema through his “Movie Journal” column in the Village Voice and as a co-founder of Film Culture magazine, the Film-Makers’ Cooperative, and Anthology Film Archives. His films and installations have been presented in museums and festivals worldwide. He also published more than twenty-five books of poetry and prose, translated into over a dozen languages.
