Join us at Bar Laika on Wednesday, June 11 from 6pm for the fourteenth edition of Playback with Qasim Naqvi.
Qasim Naqvi is an improviser, percussionist, composer, and electronic musician. In addition to being the drummer of the lauded cult minimalist trio Dawn of Midi, Naqvi’s passion for multidisciplinary work has brought him into the worlds of film, dance, installation art, orchestral and chamber music, and modular synthesis. From his early days as an improviser in New York—being exposed to the downtown music scene of the mid-90s and onward—Naqvi's work has displayed a deep appreciation for experimental practices and the avant-garde.
For Playback 0014, Qasim will share a cross-section of recent projects, including collaborations with the London Contemporary Orchestra, Jennifer Koh, Andrew Cyrille, Wadada Leo Smith, the BBC Concert Orchestra, Mariam Ghani, Naeem Mohaiemen, Alexander Whitley Dance, and more. He will also present works for modular synthesizer, including his new solo album Endling on Erased Tapes Records. Written as a modular synth prequel to his 2023 BBC Concert Orchestral work, God Docks at Death Harbor, this concept album takes the listener on an odyssey through an intense and beautiful landscape, set hundreds of years into the future.
