“I find the work enormously compelling, yet I can’t quite articulate why. Although it feels entirely Doupé, it also feels prescient. Prescient like dynamite about to blow up the dam and leave us flooded with new possibilities, drowning happily.”
—Steve Reinke on Distracted Blueberry
We hope you’ll join us on Thursday, March 30 and Saturday, April 1 for Barry Doupé: VERY BIG SHORTS and Distracted Blueberry taking place at e-flux Screening Room. The program features two parts: a “selectrospective” of shorts from 2008 to 2022, and the New York premiere of Doupé’s latest feature, the truly difficult to describe Distracted Blueberry (2019).
VERY BIG SHORTS is a selectrospective of Barry Doupé’s short works, including a handful of Object Poems (2017), his anomalous non-animated Life and People (2014), and excerpts from Doupé’s features The Colors that Combine to Make White are Important (2012) and Ponytail (2008). This screening will be followed by a conversation between Barry Doupé and filmmaker Steve Reinke.
The selectrospective serves as a kind of prologue to Saturday’s screening of Distracted Blueberry, by presenting motifs and formal experiments throughout earlier works that later culminated as scenes from the 273-minute durational id-whorl Distracted Blueberry.
Programmed by Steff Hui Ci Ling.
