Above the Crocodiles

Sonia Leimer`s video work Above the Crocodiles is based on archival footage recorded in 2002 by two Russian astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The filmic gaze from space onto various territories of Earth moves in a contingent search, brushing against geographical, ecological, and political contexts – conflict zones as well as everyday occurrences, casually commented on by the astronauts. 

Leimer appropriates this documentary material and integrates into the conversation a fictional female astronaut whose remarks express her thoughts from a current perspective, intertwining history and present, political realities and personal desire into a dynamic interplay.

This screening is part of Late check-out, the fourth chapter of the film program TUTTAUNANOTTE, curated by Francesco Urbano Ragazzi, and unfolding in four chapters between November 1, 2025 and December 26, 2025, with the films of each chapter streaming for two weeks.
