Journey Through Time

This work consists of three parts produced around the period before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake, as well as during and after the pandemic. The “time” recorded in each image is compressed, layered, and inscribed. Archive_2009–2016 (4’11”) presents a high-speed slideshow composed of approximately 10,000 photographs taken between 2009 and 2016. It attempts to fold the accumulation of sensations arising from the artist’s own movements—shaped by various social events—into the medium of video in multiple layers. SoundScapeProject_Hayama (1’47”) overlays a sound recorded at a cape in Hayama in 2006 with footage filmed at the same location ten years later, evoking the distance of time and the subjective temporality contained within it. Journey Through Time (9’50”) is constructed from photographs, diary entries, and exchanges recorded while walking through the Musashino area of Tokyo with his assistant.
