Breathing in the Water

Nomura Hitoshi captures his own profile in side view as he breathes underwater, filmed on a 16mm camera. He approaches his practice through photography, bringing a unique perspective that looks for the passage of time within objects. Drawn to the mechanics of bipedal movement and the human skeleton, he turned to a 16mm movie camera to capture the fast motion of the body. Both works in this series begin with moving image as the source, and are then made into long-format photographic prints — enlarged from consecutive frames of film laid out in sequence.
