Atomic Garden

Filmed in the aftermath of Fukushima, Atomic Garden composes a stroboscopic nocturne across fields of exposure and spectral persistence. Each late afternoon before nightfall, Aoki Sadako leaves her temporary dwelling in Iwaki City, crossing checkpoints with soil and supplies, returning to tend a garden: a routine repeated across irradiated ground.

Daylight images of the garden are placed in correspondence with a night sky lit by hanabi, fireworks erupting during ancestral festivities. Between them, a disjunctive interval: the image flickers, rhythms rupture, time refracts.

What appears is not sequence but recurrence, a form of haunted continuity. No human figures, only petals, wings, bursts of combustion, suspended between event and afterimage.
