Originally opened as Artist’s Center in 1974, Arko Art Center has reinforced its professional role as a public art institution and has taken an initiating role in shifting the paradigm of contemporary art. Arko Art Center is an affiliated museum of Arts Council Korea, reflecting the direction and demand of culture & arts support policy, and aims to be ‘a production base for contemporary visual art creation as well as a visual culture community space with experimentalism and internationality.’ With such operational objectives, Arko Art Center serves the functions of exhibition, education, and research that are both experimental and international, especially to create, share, and expand new discourses through the integration of genres and media to ultimately pursue a creative art platform based on communication and integration. To reflect the museum’s project, there are around five featured exhibitions per year with collaborative programs through local and overseas networks; it also cultivates a specialized visual art archive along with educational programs linked to exhibitions. In addition, Arko Art Center runs INSA Art Space, a creative presentation space for emerging artists, and offers amenity spaces including seminar rooms and Space Feelux, all of which constitute constant efforts to provide an arena for the formation of diverse discourses and communication within contemporary art.
