A day of conversations among policymakers, entrepreneurs, arts professionals, and artists discussing shared perspectives on the impact of the arts on politics, the role of the art market on the artistic and economic communities, and the pertinence of art biennials in a globalized world. Among the participants are Cuban artist Tania Bruguera; Australian urban festival producer Theresa Famularo; Pakistani actor, director, and social activist Jamal Shah; Dancing Classrooms Founding Director Pierre Dulaine; former US Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock; Swiss auctioneer Simon de Pury; and ART in Embassies Chief Curator Virginia Shore.

Co-organized by The Phillips Collection and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, the conference is held in conjunction with The Phillips Collection’s first course on globalization, diplomacy, and the politics of exhibitions, offered this fall to students of the School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC, and the exhibition Pakistani Voices: In Conversation with The Migration Series, presenting works by students and emerging artists from Pakistan who participated in State Department-sponsored workshops in Lahore and Islamabad on the power of art to create social change.

The Phillips’s International Forum Weekend aims to make a “global conversation through the language of modern art” a central unifying theme of the museum’s programming and exhibitions, and its identity and magnet for success in the 21st century, by bringing together leading art collectors and committed philanthropists from around the world to engage with artists, art professionals, and cultural leaders to explore topics in modern and contemporary art in a global context.
