Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) announces the appointment of Gwynne Keathley as MICA’s Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies. Keathley brings to this position 15 years of experience with extensive knowledge and expertise in the creation of art and design curricula as well as the management of educational programs at colleges of art and design.

MICA is the first art college to establish a vice provost position for research. The College’s M.F.A. programs are among the most highly ranked in the world and are currently among U.S. News and World Report’s top ten. Through 16 M.F.A., M.A., M.P.S. and M.A.T. programs, in addition to a joint M.B.A. program with Johns Hopkins University, graduate education at MICA is distinguished by its innovative approach to both instruction and problem-solving, including several first-of-their-kind programs and new approaches to online education. Graduate enrollment at MICA has grown dramatically as the College has broadened its research and professional development capabilities while maintaining a foundational focus on the highest standards of quality in fine arts and design.

“I am excited to work with the vibrant community at MICA to strengthen graduate studies and research and advance the College’s position on the forefront of art and design education,” Keathley said. “Through trans-disciplinary collaboration and partnerships, we have the opportunity to develop innovative programs and projects that respond to emerging issues and model new forms of creative practice. Together we can create a platform for students and faculty to further explore challenges facing Baltimore and society at large, and to respond to these conditions in ways that are both insightful and transformative.”

Keathley most recently has served as vice provost at Philadelphia University, leading efforts in university-wide academic and curricular initiatives, support services supervision and assessment. From 2008 to 2010, Keathley held the positions of associate provost and interim provost at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Prior to Otis, 1997–2008, Keathley was associate professor at Parsons the New School for Design, New York, where she taught project-based courses and served in a number of capacities, including chair of Core Studies, a department that contained the Foundation program and the Integrated Design Curriculum, a self-directed, interdisciplinary B.F.A. degree. Keathley also has five years of experience as a professional design practitioner and has worked with several firms and museums.

Keathley replaces Gunalan Nadarajan, who now serves as the dean of the School of Art & Design at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Keathley holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University.
