California College of the Arts is pleased to host Craft Forward-ing: Conversations on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a one-day symposium on Saturday, March 2, organized in collaboration with the American Craft Council. Three to four speakers will present their work around the topics of creative entrepreneurship, working in multiple worlds (from the gallery to social engagement to the marketplace), and how craft processes can feed diverse and sustainable practices.

The program is part of the American Craft Council’s Making Meaning in the Marketplace Program, a series of symposia focusing on the next generation of craft artists and their burgeoning influence on the larger culture and art market. Each year the ACC partners with some of the nation’s leading schools in craft media to co-create programming that addresses students’ interests and considers the myriad ways they might contribute to the future of craft.
CCA is excited to be selected again to contribute to this dynamic series. We previously partnered with the ACC to present an evening event in fall 2008 titled Craft and the Next Generation of Thought. Also, in 2011 CCA presented an international symposium titled Craft Forward, and Craft Forward-ing is conceived as an extension of the conversations that began at that conference. All of these programs demonstrate CCA’s ongoing commitment to furthering contemporary craft dialogues.

The American Craft Council is a national, nonprofit educational organization founded in 1943 by Aileen Osborn Webb. The mission of the Council is to promote understanding and appreciation of contemporary craft.

Shoemaker’s Dialogues was a nine-day “urban thinkery” centered on a shoemaker’s atelier, incorporating public programs and a performance. The atelier was an open interpretation of Simon the Shoemaker’s fifth-century Athens studio in which Socrates allegedly had extensive philosophical discussions with Simon and local youth.
