Boris Mikhailov
Deweer Gallery takes great pleasure in announcing its second one-person exhibition with the internationally celebrated Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov (b. 1938, Kharkov, Ukraine. Works in Kharkov, Ukraine, and Berlin, Germany). For this exhibition the artist himself makes a selection from his “Yesterday’s Sandwich” series.

The “Yesterday’s Sandwich” series was made between 1960 and 1970; each work is the result of a photomontage. The images of the photomontages are made by superimposing—in a very spontaneous and almost hazardous way—different photographic images. About his technique the artist states two important things at least: one could interpret the technique as the introduction of cinematic language into his photography (by dissolving the distance between two shots) and that it is a typical Soviet technique. The photomontages are assemblages of elements that carry opposing meanings thus reflecting the dualism and the contradictions of Soviet society. During the Soviet era the series indeed was never officially shown. Initially and over almost 35 years, the series only existed in the form of slides to be screened. It was only at the end of the 1980s, when Mikhailov started to live in the West too, that he began making the first prints.

Norbert Witzgall Veronica
With a contribution by Mathilde Ter Heijne

For his second individual exhibition with Deweer Gallery, German painter Norbert Witzgall (b. 1976, Münchberg, Germany; lives and works in Berlin, Germany) has foreseen new works only. As is commonly known, Witzgall focuses on painting, and within painting on portraits. Working on images with specific iconographic meaning and that have been selected very precisely, Witzgall explores new ways to extend the art of portraiture. In doing so he likes to broaden our classical knowledge about the art of painting and about the potentials of the painterly means. For a recent joint exhibition in Berlin, Norbert Witzgall collaborated with Dutch artist Mathilde Ter Heijne. In their joint works photographic images by Ter Heijne were projected onto paintings by Witzgall. Ter Heijne will contribute again to our exhibition Norbert Witzgall – Veronica.

Booth 9 D 02 in Pabellón 9
February 27–March 1, 2015

Deweer Gallery participates at ARCOmadrid for the sixth time. After our widely appreciated participation last year, we have opted to present a double programme at ARCOmadrid 2015: an ensemble of sculptures and watercolors by Spanish artist Enrique Marty, selected from his series “Soft Cockney”; and new sculptures by Stephan Balkenhol (Germany), drawings and an installation by Jan Fabre (Belgium), and paintings by Günther Förg (Germany/Switzerland) and Benjamin Moravec (France/Germany).
