SALON POPULAIRE is a meeting point for conversations on art and neighboring topics, and for the convergence of different ideas, positions and contexts. Conceived as an informal social space with bar and kitchen and programmed along the two leitmotifs space and love at the same time, it can actively be re-defined and –used by and with its guests according to the respective needs.

SALON POPULAIRE is envisioned both on the basis of and as a rupture with the history of the salon, and, above all, it is a place at which knowledge is generated and exchanged. As a semi-public space, it allows differing utilizations, spanning the privacy of an apartment to the public of an institution. We want to experiment with formats which both intend to break the hierarchical forms of traditional presentations, podium discussions and seminars on the one hand, and the increasingly popular category of the event on the other, and which exceed the private talk at home, at a café or a at dinner with friends in a restaurant. A prerequisite is: the currently ruling situation in the art context of ‘one talks, the others listen’, is to be suspended, and the audience as a mere witness of the production of cultural surplus value should be abolished. In contrast to this, we understand the SALON POLULAIRE as an invitation for joint debate.

SALON POPULAIRE is a project by THE OFFICE (Ellen Blumenstein) and Arthur Berlin (Tanja Schomaker); spacial conception in collaboration with raumlaborberlin (Markus Bader)

LOVE & SPACE
To begin with, SALON POPULAIRE follows two thematic threads which evolve out of the composition of the project itself. On the one hand, we are interested in current conceptions and the handling of space, which have given important impulses to the content and the formal direction of the salon. Out of this, we have developed preliminary key questions which deal with the production conditions in the arts and other fields: Which/where are the spaces for thinking and the presentation of art today? How do they look like? Which (social) functions can they perform? In which way do they inscribe themselves into urban space?

The second topic love has emerged out of the social function of the salon. Personal and/or private bonds form a natural part of the art system today, a division between ‘private’ and ‘professional’ is even less possible here than in other fields (or it is even unwanted). Dealing with these relationships is problematic insofar, as they are an immanent part of the exploitation logic in the capitalist system, and thus are automatically purposeful. In the salon, we follow the thesis that love nevertheless, and still has the transforming (and maybe the revolutionary) potential to break open the rigid polarity of advantage/profit and pure disinterestedness, and that the basic principles of solidarity, support, care and trust, et.al., which come along with love, are preconditions for meaningful working and living.
