For the 11th issue of frieze d/e:

This is Hardcore: on the occasion of her forthcoming retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Dominic Eichler unravels the work and persona of Isa Genzken.

Boris Groys considers the aesthetic theories of Wassily Kandinsky, developed during Kandinsky’s time teaching at the Bauhaus, and how they would later be applied to the design of prison cells in Spain.

Curator, gallerist and collector René Block speaks with artist Maria Eichhorn about the importance of humour, friendship, Fluxus and music in a career spanning 50 years; Karin Sander and sociologist Harald Walzer discuss production, reduction and cognitive dissonance with Jörg Heiser—with a conceptual intervention by Sander; and Astrid Kaminski talks to US-born, German-based choreographer William Forsythe about ‘wrong’ kinds of comedy, philosophy in dance and brief bouts of weightlessness.

Elsewhere in the issue: to mark the 50th anniversary of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin residency programme, Jan Kedves visits the apartment that has been home to amongst others, Nan Goldin, Cyprien Gaillard and now AA Bronson.

Logistics: Michael Sailstorfer explains how he ‘reversed nature’ in his project for the Emscherkunst.2013 exhibition in the Ruhr valley.

Trouvaille: artist Tobias Madison presents his selection of favourite publications.

Jörg Scheller examines the curiously long history of art and exercise and Bert Rebhandl considers the quasi-documentaries of Viennese filmmakers Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel.

Finally, for ‘Das Ding’ literary and fashion theorist Barbara Vinken shares an object of special significance to her, ‘my favourite object is actually two.’

With 20 exhibition reviews from 15 cities including Basel, Berlin, Bern, Bonn, Bremen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Graz, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Kraichtal, Munich, Los Angeles, Vienna and Zurich.
