frieze d/e issue 7 out now

The Winter issue of frieze d/e features Édouard Glissant‘s final statement on Opacity – in the first English and German translations, taken from his last book of essays Philosophie de la Relation (Philosophy of the Relation, 2009).

‘Why must we evaluate people on the scale of the transparency of ideas proposed by the West? … As far as I’m concerned, a person has the right to be opaque.’
Édouard Glissant (1928–2011)

Curator and critic Ulrich Loock takes stock of Glissant’s legacy in contemporary art theories and practices. Critic Jan Verwoert considers the implications of opacity for communication while tracing a history of art works that resist interpretation, from Lygia Clark‘s insect sculptures to Trisha Donnelly‘s enigmatic films.

Also featured in issue 7:
Vanishing Acts: Dominikus Müller manages to avoid falling into Andreas Slominski‘s traps while exploring the artist’s recent forays into Polystyrene paintings and rooftop performances, including his latest work at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Deurle, Belgium.

With a special project by Andreas Slominski.

In the wake of Jessica Warboys‘s recent show at Bielefelder Kunstverein, Philipp Ekardt follows the trajectory of her works, from sculpture to film, from painting to stained glass; Christy Lange discovers the secrets of power in the projects of Korpys / Löffler; and Melanie Ohnemus takes in Gitte Villesen‘s biographical videos, which veer between documentary and monumentality.

‘Logistics’: In the first of a new series, frieze d/e invites an artist to talk about their working processes, Peter Regli explains how to get a marble snowman from a quarry in Vietnam to a garden in Los Angeles.

In our columns: Ulrich Gutmair & Tal Sterngast look at the new legend left by Berlin’s recently closed Times Bar; Jan Kedves wonders if Rainald Goetz‘s new novel might actually be an ongoing performance piece; Thomas Hübener reviews Nadja Geer‘s severe study of German Pop critics, including Goetz and Diedrich Diederichsen; and Jörg Scheller gets a tour of Fluxus in Wiesbaden with collector Michael Berger. Plus, Maria Zinfert delves into the holdings of the German Literature Archive Marbach—and discovers the family photographs of the late, great film theorist Siegfried Kracauer

As part of our regular series ‘In a Word’, editor Thilo Knott and researcher Gabriela Jiga-Boy look at an expression that everyone dreads: DEADLINE.

For ‘Das Ding’, artist Lawrence Weiner chooses a special object of significance from his working and living environment.

The Winter issue also includes a new addition to the reviews section: ‘Currents’, where Kito Nedo considers a recent spate of exhibitions that attest to the rise of carpet as an artistic medium. Plus 20 reviews: Miriam Cahn at Karlsruhe’s Badischer Kunstverein; Robin Bruch at Mathew, Berlin; Paul McCarthy at Hauser & Wirth, Zurich; Benedikt Hipp at Kunstpalais Erlangen; and Manuel Graf at Kunstverein Hamburg. As well as exhibitions from: Berlin, Cologne, Arnsberg, Fribourg, Dresden, Leipzig, Basel, Graz, Vienna and Dusseldorf.
