2012 Call for Galleries – Participation at ARCOmadrid 2012

www.arco.ifema.es

We are pleased to announce that the application period is now open for ARCOmadrid 2012 to be held from 15th to 19th February 2012. Following the positive response to the changes introduced in 2011—reduction in the size of the fair, a greater emphasis on quality of exhibiting galleries and works on display and a firm commitment with collecting—quality continues to be the top priority for the upcoming edition. For the future selection of galleries, the booths at the last edition of the fair will be carefully analysed, together with the gallery’s programme and the project for ARCOmadrid 2012.

With the objective of differentiating ARCOmadrid’s role within the overall art fair scene, and to reinforce its role as a source of information for the large number of collectors and art world professionals who visit the fair every year, ARCOmadrid 2012 presents a new initiative aimed at highlighting one artist per booth. The idea is to provide an extra incentive for galleries to propose a special presentation of one of the artists in its roster, without implying any kind of exclusive project or solo show. ARCOmadrid will then give special coverage to those artists in its press releases, catalogue and infoarco leaflet. At the same time, all information regarding these presentations will be sent in advance to all invited critics and curators before the fair’s opening.

We are pleased to announce the presence of The Netherlands as ARCOmadrid’s 2012 guest country. With the active collaboration of the Mondriaan Foundation and the Embassy of The Netherlands in Spain, ARCOmadrid 2012 will present a selection of Dutch galleries curated by Xander Karskens (Breda, 1973), while also attracting the country’s major collectors, curators and critics.

ARCOmadrid will also be continuing its curated programmes designed to provide an overview of upcoming galleries and new artistic proposals. In this regard, the fair is presenting a second edition of Opening, a section aimed at European galleries with less than 8 years of trajectory. This year’s section will be curated by Manuel Segade.

Solo Projects will again be focused on Latin-American artists. This year, the section will reinforce its ambition as a space for showcasing new work by Latin-American artists with the collaboration of a team of five curators. Galleries with specific presentations of Latin-American artists are invited to apply to this section. A team comprising the guest curators and a member of the fair’s committee will then select the most interesting projects for ARCOmadrid 2012. Solo Projects also operates as a space for exchange between Latin America and Europe, with professional meetings with museum directors, critics and curators.

ARCOmadrid’s activities are aimed at encouraging visits from major collectors and critics both from Spain and abroad. The collectors programme, the “First Collectors” initiative and the invitations issued to leading art consultants will be coupled with roundtables on collecting (coordinated again by Rosa Martínez) and the Professional Meetings. These meetings, introduced for the first time in 2011, were essential to promote a fluid exchange of ideas among active art world professionals, as well as bringing to the fair around one hundred critics and curators whose presence was highly appreciated by exhibiting galleries.

We are pleased to announce the opening of the application period for ARCOmadrid 2012, which finishes on June 24th. We would kindly like to ask you to fill in the Evaluation Sheet with as much detail as possible.
