Heinz Emigholz
The Formative Years

17 September – 31 October 2010

Opening:
Thursday 16 September 2010, at 19.00

Extra City presents the early works of German experimental filmmaker and artist Heinz Emigholz. His work transcends institutional and artistic boundaries and disciplines. While today he is internationally acclaimed for his films portraying buildings by architects such as Adolf Loos, Rudolph Schindler and Bruce Goff, Emigholz played a decisive role in the international experimental film movement of the 1970s.

The exhibition The Formative Years presents eight of Emigholz’s films in a unique single installation conceived by the artist. The central theme is the passage and translation of time into space. Five out of the eight presented works are composed of thousands of single photographs from industrial and rural landscapes that are assembled into movies following a precisely calculated score. The silent films explore the language of the camera, and the relation between real and simulated time, and cinematic and actual space.

HOTEL (1976), a sound film made in homage to Jack Smith, is an experiment about linearity and causality. DEMON (1977) expands the fragmentation of linear time through the rhythm of words. The film is a cinematic translation of Stéphane Mallarmé´s poem “The Demon of Analogy”. The final component of the installation, THE BASIS OF MAKE-UP I-III (1974-2004) provides the most comprehensive insight into the universe of Emigholz’s work and his vision. In these films, largely composed of single still shots, the key “actors” are his illustrated notebooks dating from 1971 to 2004, next to photographs, drawings and studies.

The Formative Years presents this body of works for the first time as an integrated installation in one large open space, in which each film is being screened as a digital loop, allowing for the parallel viewing of its different components, and producing ever-new constellations between its different rhythmical scores.

Heinz Emigholz (born 1948) has worked since 1973 as a filmmaker, artist, writer and producer in Germany and the USA. In 1974 he started his encyclopedic drawing series “The Basis of Make-Up” in which he looks back on numerous exhibitions, retrospectives, lectures and publications.

Falke Pisano
(Conditions of Agency)

Project Room Extra City
17 September – 31 October 2010

Opening:
Thursday 16 September 2010, at 19.00

Parallel to Heinz Hemigholz’s The Formative Years, the Dutch artist Falke Pisano shows a new constellation of works in Extra City’s Project Room. Both artists share a strong interest in the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of form, space and time.

“First, space is structured by several specific points. Afterwards, time is installed when the potential of agency, of the positions these points constitute, is actualized by figures that speak. When speech happens at more than one point, expressed differences reveal structures that direct relations and movements. Because the figures only exist when they speak and because the positions can be occupied more than once (successively or simultaneously), finally, it is what speech, as a fourth dimension, makes visible, that is extended beyond the boundaries of the image.” (Falke Pisano, from the book Figures of Speech, 2010)

In the last five years Falke Pisano has developed a series of works brought together under the title “Figures of Speech”. This cycle of works, consisting of several interrelated modules, culminates in her recent publication of the same name. For (Conditions of Agency), Pisano now seizes the opportunity to take a step back, bringing some key elements of this assemblage back into the exhibition arena, and letting them gain momentum in space and time.

Pisano’s work presented in Extra City’s Project Room is based on examining the performance of presence, stressing both its processuality and its fixed form.

Falke Pisano (NL, 1978) lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland (2010), Figures of Speech (Formation of a Crystal), Hollybush Gardens, London, England (2009), Organon on the Wave (with Benoit Maire), Kunstverein, Graz, Austria (2009). Recent group shows she has been represented in include: For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, USA and traveling (2009), Making Worlds, 53rd Venice Biennale, Italy (2009), Mirrors, Marco, Vigo, Spain (2009), Modernologies, Macba, Barcelona, Spain (2009), Yokohama Triennale, Japan (2008), Word Event, Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland (2008), Manifesta 7, Trentino, South Tyrol, Italy (2008), Show Me, Don’t Tell Me, Brussels Biennale, Belgium (2008) and Playground Festival , STUK, Leuven, Belgium (2008).
